Why is this important?
There are many benefits to speaking and behaving confidently. When you project confidence, people are more likely to take you seriously and listen to what you have to say. You’ll also find it easier to build relationships and networking connections. And confident people tend to be more successful in both their personal and professional lives.
What does it look like when you don’t speak or behave confidently?
There are a few common signs that you’re not projecting confidence:
- You speak in a low voice or mumble.
- You use words like, “just”, “maybe”, or trail off when listing any of your achievements (especially in job interviews).
- You avoid eye contact.
- You fidget or cross your arms defensively.
- You apologize frequently.
- You make excuses.
So how can you start to feel more confident? Here are a few tips:
- Speak up! One of the best ways to boost your confidence is to practice speaking in public. Start by giving presentations at work, or joining a Toastmasters group. The more you speak, the easier it will become.
- Remember that everyone makes mistakes. We all have moments of insecurity, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes and everyone has “off” days. What matters is how you recover from those moments.
- Practice power posing. Amy Cuddy’s research has shown that standing in a “power pose” for just two minutes can increase your confidence levels. Some power poses include standing with your hands on your hips, leaning back in a chair with your feet on the desk, or stretching out your arms and legs.
- Use positive self-talk. Our inner dialogue has a big impact on how we feel about ourselves. So start speaking kindly to yourself! Replace negative thoughts (I’m not good enough) with positive ones (I can do this).
- Pay attention to your posture. When you’re feeling insecure, it’s common to hunch your shoulders and slump your head. But by paying attention to your posture, you can send a signal of confidence to others. Sit or stand up tall, with your chest open and your chin parallel to the ground.
- Smile! A smile is one of the simplest ways to feel more confident. It makes you look approachable and can actually make you feel happier.
- Ask for what you want and need. When you’re confident, you’re more likely to get what you want in life. So don’t be afraid to ask for what you need, whether it’s a raise at work or help from a friend.
- Realize that you don’t have to be confident all the time. No one is 100% confident all the time. There will be times when you feel shy or scared, and that’s okay. Just remember to focus on your strengths and use them to your advantage.
- Cultivate a beginner’s mind. One of the best ways to boost your confidence is to act like a beginner. When you’re open to learning new things, you’ll find it easier to take risks and try new things. You’ll also be less likely to compare yourself to others.
- Make eye contact. This is one of the simplest ways to appear confident. When you make eye contact, people will see that you’re engaged and interested in what they’re saying.
- Practice. Just like with anything else, confidence is something that you can practice. The more you do it, the easier it will become. So go out there and start being your most confident self!
- Get organized. Feeling frazzled and disorganized can make you feel insecure. So take the time to get organized and stay on top of your tasks. This will help you feel more in control of your life.
- Take care of yourself. When you’re feeling good about yourself, it’s easier to project confidence. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet, and exercise regularly.
- Talk to a life coach. If you’re having trouble building confidence on your own, talking to a life coach can be helpful. A good life coach will help you identify your strengths and give you tools and techniques for boosting your confidence.
Try out these tips and see how they work for you. With a little practice, you’ll be speaking and behaving with confidence in no time!
